Nephrology Social Worker, NKF Program Coordinator

Nephrology social worker Karren King has been a passionate and productive volunteer for the National Kidney Foundation for nearly 30 years.

Beginning in 1980, her background, dedication and expertise propelled her to a leadership position in NKF's patient education programs. She served NKF's constituents on various boards and committees related to patient services, scientific activities and early prevention. She was also editor of Family Focus, a quarterly periodical about kidney disease-related issues for dialysis patients.

Ms. King published articles on various psycho-social aspects of kidney disease, including adherence, patient education and rehabilitation. She co-authored NKF's groundbreaking piece Initiation or Withdrawal of Dialysis in End Stage Renal Disease: Guidelines for the Health Care Team.

Ms. King is a past national President of NKF's Council of Nephrology Social Workers, previously served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the National Kidney Foundation and chaired its Patients Services Committee.

She was awarded the Martin Wagner Volunteer Award in 1995. She is a nephrology social work consultant.
