Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease
When you have diabetes, you are at increased risk for developing chronic kidney disease (CKD).
- The risk of developing CKD increases with the length of time a person has diabetes. About one third of people with diabetes will eventually develop CKD.
- Diabetes is the single leading cause of kidney failure in the U.S., accounting for about 45 % of people who start treatment for kidney failure each year.
- In 2001, more than 40,000 people with diabetes developed kidney failure.
