Taking the lead from one of its franchise owners who gave the gift of life to an employee, Charley's Grilled Subs® has decided to give a month-long gift this January by designating a portion of its sales to further NKF's life-saving work.
"We were all moved to witness such an act of faith and kindness by Charley's franchisee, Marcus Gilbert, who donated his kidney to save the life of a 16-year-old employee, Juan Delgado," shares James Pa, Senior Director of Marketing for Charley's.
Charley's will be donating 10 cents of the proceeds from each sandwich sold during the month of January - National Philly CheeseSteak Month- to support the NKF."And don't forget to buy a sandwich at your local Charley's
Juan's battle with end-stage renal disease began three years ago. Juggling school and mounting health problems, Juan had difficulty finding and holding on to a job. In March, Marcus stepped forward and offered him a position at Charley's in University Mall in Orem, Utah- but his giving wouldn't stop there.
Shortly after starting work, Juan learned he needed a kidney and was placed on the transplant list. Marcus and his entire team stepped up to assist Juan by fund raising to help Juan's family with medical expenses for a transplant.
In order to receive a transplant, however, Juan needed to first find a kidney donor. No one in his family was a match, so Marcus got tested, found out he was a match, and, without hesitation, agreed to donate his kidney to his young employee.
"Although every enterprise has fiscal responsibility, we must remember that the heartbeat of a business is always its people. Partnering with the National Kidney Foundation was a simple extension of Charley's commitment to ‘strengthening our neighbors,'" continues Pa.
