ADVANCED PRACTITIONER TRACK
Integrated Hemodialysis/Peritoneal Dialysis Course
Tuesday, April 2, 7:00am – 5:00pm
Director: Joanne Bargman, MD, FRCPC
Session 221, 8.0 credits
Target Audience:
Designed for nephrologists, nephrology fellows, advanced practitioners, and nephrology nurses.
Course Description:
This course will deliver an integrated and comprehensive approach to the physiologic underpinnings and “nuts and bolts” of chronic dialysis therapy. Approach to the optimal management of chronic dialysis patients with respect to extracellular fluid volume control, solute removal, access complications, and other infectious and non-infectious complications will be discussed for both peritoneal and hemodialysis
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the physics, physiology and techniques of peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis.
- State the basis and practical application of dialysis dose prescription in peritoneal and hemodialysis.
- Know the infectious and noninfectious complications of peritoneal and hemodialysis.
- Describe the importance of proper access in both peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis and potential complications of access problems.
- Recognize special issues pertaining to dialysis in infants and children
- Identify treatment-related complications in peritoneal and hemodialysis and discuss potential treatment strategies.
