ADVANCED PRACTITIONER TRACK
Interventional Nephrology Course
Tuesday, April 26, 2011 | 7:30 am – 5:15 pm
Course Co-Directors: Jamie Ross, MD and Loay Salman, MD
Target Audience:
This course is designed for clinical nephrologists, nephrology fellows, advanced practitioners and other health care professionals caring for patients with chronic kidney disease and end stage renal disease.
Course Description:
This course provides a well rounded education about hemodialysis access, peritoneal dialysis and ultrasound principles. It is an introduction to a variety of interventional and diagnostic procedures used by interventional nephrologists to establish, monitor and maintain a healthy/functional dialysis access. These procedures include: diagnostic and ultrasound guided renal biopsy, placement of temporary and permanent central venous catheters for hemodialysis, placement of peritoneal dialysis catheters, vascular mapping, monitoring and surveillance of vascular access, salvage procedures for failing or thrombosed arterio-venous fistulas and grafts along with the indications and contraindications of deployment of intravascular coils and stents. In addition, hands-on training workshops will help the participant appreciate the full extent of the course by focusing on physical exam of the vascular access plus dummy training in insertion of tunneled dialysis catheters, percutaneous balloon angioplasty, mechanical Thrombectomy procedures and Ultrasound applications in renal patients.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the anatomy and examination of the vessels commonly used for hemodialysis access.
- Identify the basic techniques used to diagnose and treat vascular access dysfunction.
- Learn the techniques for hemodialysis and peritoneal catheter placement.
- Learn the appropriate management of various types of hemodialysis vascular access dysfunctions (including access thrombosis).
- Describe the approach for central venous stenosis and the role/Indications of intravascular stents.
- Identify the logistics of starting a new Interventional Nephrology program.
