Foundations of Nutrition Practice for Kidney Disease: Strategies I
Tuesday, April 2, 2013, 7:50 am - 5:00pm
Course Director: Louise Clement, MS, RD, CSR, LD
Session 520; 7.75 CPEUs
Target Audience:
Designed for registered dietitians and advanced practitioners (NPs and PAs) who wish to strengthen their overall knowledge of the complex nutritional requirements of people with chronic kidney disease, and CKD 5 in particular.
Course Description:
This course will focus on learning and building on the basics of renal nutrition. Sessions will include Medical Nutrition Therapy for hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, bone disease, treating malnutrition, and anemia presented by nationally-recognized leaders, plus guidelines regarding vitamin requirements, programs and resources available for CKD 5, urea kinetic adequacy, and nutrition assessment. This all day workshop will conclude with a number of case studies to help practically apply solutions to common issues facing professionals who treat people with kidney disease.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Obtain practical information to apply to Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) in chronic kidney disease patients (CKD) re. the care of people on hemodialysis.
- Discuss the treatment of inflammation and wasting including their assessment and nutritional requirements.
- Describe normal bone metabolism and resulting alterations in CKD. Discuss treatment options appropriate for this population.
- Discuss physiology and transport in peritoneal dialysis, the guidelines to meet the nutrient requirements in PD, and special considerations.
- List available CKD programs and resources including CMS, quality initiatives, and ESRD Networks.
- Review kinetic modeling in hemodialysis re. factors related to clearance, KT/V, and the identification and treatment of problems.
- Explain the process of anemia management re. RBC development, the role of ESAs, and the the nutrients required to enhance this process.
- Discuss the unique vitamin requirements of patients in CKD 5 by status assessment, recommendations, and knowledge of available products.
- Describe the process of nutrition assessment in the dialysis population. Discuss pertinent rules and standards, the RD role in patient assessment, and the patient Plan of Care
