DIETITIAN PROGRAM TRACK
Foundations of Nutrition Practice for Kidney Disease (Strategies I)
Tuesday, April 13, 2010 | 7:50am – 5:00pm
Course Director: Louise Clement, MS, RD, CSR, LD
Session 520, 8.0 credits
Target Audience:
This course is designed for dietitians who are new to renal nutrition, as well as for dietitians who work in non-renal settings but wish to strengthen their basic knowledge in this dynamic area.
Course Description:
This course is designed to 1) integrate new research into clinical practice, 2) foster critical thinking strategies to overcome nutrition related barriers, and 3) promote interactive learning that will result in changes in practice which ultimately will improve patient outcomes. This will be achieved by presenting information from the latest in public policy and research which is relevant to clinical renal nutrition practice. Topics for presentation and discussion include phosphate additives in the food supply; integrating research into everyday practice; micronutrients; uric acid, metabolic syndrome and HFCS – the connection; and nutrition interventions from RCT to practice.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe research results and techniques in which those results can be integrated into clinical practice.
- Generate dialog between participants on ways to overcome nutrition related barriers including current public policy on food labeling and clinical/patient barriers to achieving nutritional and metabolic goals.
- Use novel and interactive learning to present advanced information with techniques which will foster critical thinking, retention, and thus enhanced learning by participants
