Trends In Kidney Transplantation: What’s Hot in 2010

Target Audience:
Designed for community nephrologists, transplant nephrologists, nephrology fellows, transplant coordiations, transplant pharmacists and other professionals involved in the care of the kidney transplant patient.
Course Description:
The most recent advances in tissue typing, transplant immunosuppression, current interventions to increase the donor pool, and minimization of long-term morbidity in the care of kidney transplant recipients will be the focus of this course. Participants will acquire basic knowledge of tissue typing techniques, including the “virtual crossmatch”. The latest information on immunosuppression trends, including avoidance of calcineurin based regimens will be reviewed. Ways to expand the donor pool, both through the use of extended criteria donors and paired donor exchange programs will be discussed. The course will also review the recent KDIGO guidelines for long-term management of the transplant recipient as well as important fungal/viral infections in the era of emerging pathogens. Both case discussions and an audience response system will be used to promote participant education.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the basic tissue typing concepts and be familiar with newer techniques, including the “virtual crossmatch”.
- Be familiar with current and upcoming immunosuppressive regimens, their mechanisms of actions and new immunosuppression trends.
- Understand ways to expand the kidney donor pool through the use of extended criteria donors and paired exchange programs.
- Apply recent KDIGO guidelines to the long-term care and management of kidney transplant recipients.
- Diagnose and manage fungal/viral infections in kidney transplant recipients.
