Presenters: Harold Szerlip, MD
Workshop Description: Test your knowledge of nephrology. Come and see how your compare to your colleagues. During this workshop you will have the opportunity to answer 30 Board-type questions that will cover a wide range of topics include electrolytes, acid-base, AKI, acute and chronic dialysis, CKD management and transplantation. Responses will be anonymously tallied using an audience response system. You are guaranteed to have fun and learn at the same time!
Workshop: Management of Nephrolithiasis |
Session # 231 |
Chair: David Goldfarb, MD
Presenter:Orson Moe, MD, David Goldfarb, MD, John Asplin, MD, Brian Matlaga, MD
Workshop Description: This workshop will focus on optimal treatment for patients with recurrent kidney stones. Dietary recommendations to prevent kidney stone formation will be discussed. Optimal medical therapy to prevent various types of kidney stones will be reviewed. Cases will be presented illustrating diagnostic challenges and applications of dietary and medical therapy. Surgical management for stone disease will be assessed.
Workshop: Reviewing Clinical Papers |
Session # 232 |
*Complimentary for Fellows
Chair: Holly Kramer, MD & Kerri Cavanaugh, MD
Presenters: Linda Fried, MD, Eric Taylor, MD, Glenn Chertow, MD
Workshop Description:Evaluating clinical research studies is critical for practicing evidence-based medicine. This workshop will discuss the critical issues for evaluating and interpreting clinical research studies including observational and clinical trials designs, and common analytic methods. Participants will then practice the application of specific strategies and learn to identify common pitfalls in study design and analysis for interpretation and application to patients with kidney disease. Recent examples from the current literature will serves as interactive “cases” to illustrate methods to identify these key elements.
Workshop: Controversies and Novel Therapies for Renal Osteodystrophy |
Session #233 |
Chairs: Orlando Gutierrez, MD and Peter McCullough, MD
Presenters: Andrew Bostom, MD, Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh , MD, Jose Weisinger, MD
Workshop Description: This session will explore novel therapies to treat hyperphosphatemia and renal osteodystrophy. In addition, it will address the safety of established therapies such as bisphosphonates in CKD, ESRD, and post kidney transplant.
Workshop: Radiocontrast and Gadolinium |
Session #234 |
Chair: Steven Weisbord, MD, MSc
Presenters:Hariprasad Trivedi, Steven Weisbord, MD, MSc, Mark Perazella
Workshop Description: The use of contrast-enhanced imaging studies in patients with chronic kidney disease poses a challenge due to the risks of complications associated with both iodinated contrast for angiography and computed tomography and gadolinium-containing agents for magnetic resonance imaging. This workshop will review the risks associated with iodinated contrast, strategies for the prevention of contrast-induced acute kidney injury and the relationship between gadolinium-containing contrast agents and the syndrome of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.
Friday, April 29, 11:30am - 1:00pm
Workshop: New Tools for Improving Adherence in CKD |
Session # 235 |
Chair: Wendy St. Peter, PharmD
Presenters: Peace, Teri Browne, LCSW, PhD, Karen Crampton, LCSW
Workshop Description: There are numerous studies that have documented poor adherence to medications in chronic kidney disease (CKD), dialysis and transplant populations. Non-adherence in kidney transplant patients can lead to organ rejection, while non-adherence in CKD or dialysis patients may lead to increased morbidity and mortality. There are multiple barriers that can result in medication non-adherence and numerous strategies that have been utilized to improve medication adherence. This workshop is designed as an interdisciplinary, hands-on session to learn how to apply new technology tools and other strategies to improve oral medication self-management in CKD, dialysis and transplant patients.
