PHYSICIAN PROGRAM TRACK
Interventional Nephrology
Wednesday, May 9, 2012
7:30am – 5:15pm
Course Directors: Loay Salman, MD, Amy Dwyer, MD
Target Audience:
This course is designed for clinical nephrologists, nephrology fellows, advanced practitioners and other health care professionals caring for patients with chronic kidney disease.
Course Description:
This course provides a well rounded education about hemodialysis access, peritoneal dialysis and ultrasound principles. The course will focus on vascular access care as part of a general nephrology practice. It is also an introduction to a variety of interventional and diagnostic procedures used by interventional nephrologists to establish, monitor and maintain a healthy and functional dialysis access. These procedures include: diagnostic and ultrasound guided renal biopsy, placement of temporary and permanent central venous catheters for hemodialysis, placement of peritoneal dialysis catheters, vascular mapping, monitoring and surveillance of vascular access, and salvage procedures for failing or thrombosed arterio-venous fistulas and grafts. In addition, hands-on training workshops will help the participant appreciate the full extent of the course by focusing on physical exam of the vascular access, insertion of tunneled dialysis catheters, percutaneous balloon angioplasty, mechanical thrombectomy procedures and ultrasound applications in renal patients.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the anatomy of the vessels commonly used for hemodialysis access.
- Learn the proper physical exam of a dialysis vascular access
- Learn the pre-operative evaluation for hemodialysis vascular access placement
- Understand vascular access surveillance techniques
- Understand the signs and symptoms of vascular access dysfunction
- Differentiate the possibilities of hand ischemia by patient history and physical exam
- Become familiar with basic interventional techniques used to diagnose and treat vascular access dysfunction
- Become familiar with the techniques for peritoneal catheter placement
- Understand the indications for renal artery imaging
- Become familiar with the tunneled catheter placement procedure
- Learn how to manage dialysis catheter dysfunction
- Learn how to manage catheter-related bacteremia
- Learn the indications and appropriate patient population for PD catheter placement
- Understand the possible uses of renal ultrasound
- Understands indications and contraindications for renal biopsy
- Understand the role of a vascular access coordinator
