Primer Reviewing Current High-Impact Research Studies

Session 230

Chairs: Holly Kramer, MD and Kerri Cavanaugh, MD

Presenters: Eric Taylor, MD and Holly Kramer, MD

Workshop Description: The information age has created tremendous opportunities for expanding clinical research and moving clinical science forward. However, clinicians may feel overwhelmed and ill-equipped to evaluate and interpret the majority of clinical research that is published and wonder whether findings in a particular study are actually applicable to their patient population. This workshop will provide clinicians with a few simple tools to evaluate high impact clinical research. The workshop will be interactive and participants will be walked through the evaluation process of a research study.

Electrolytes

Session 231

Presenters: Jerry Yee, MD and Harold Szerlip, MD

Workshop Description: Experts will present interesting electrolyte cases and challenge the audience to make the diagnosis and choose the appropriate treatment. This is an excellent review of renal pathophysiology. Attendees will gain a better understanding of electrolyte disorders and review mechanisms of electrolyte transport in the kidney.

How to Set Up a Home Hemodialysis Program

Session 232

Urine Microscopy

Session 233

Chairs: Linda Fried, MD and Mark Perazella, MD

Presenters: Paul Palevsky, MD and Mark Perazella, MD

Workshop Description: Urine microscopy is an important component of the evaluation of patients with kidney disease. A careful evaluation of the urine can help narrow the differential diagnosis in CKD and AKI and can help determine prognosis in AKI. As most urinalyses are now done in central laboratories, nephrologist training and comfort with this tool has decreased. This workshop will start with a review of the approach to microscopy, its use in AKI and differential diagnosis. Most of the time will be devoted to cases with questions and answers to illustrate important points.

Topics in Interventional Nephrology

Session 234

Chairs: Micah Chan, MD and Charmaine Lok, MD

Presenters: Micah Chan, MD, Igemar Davidson, MD, Timmy Lee, MD, and Loay Salman, MD

Workshop Description: This workshop will provide a practical and evidence based review of topics current in Interventional Nephrology. Leading experts in the field will discuss catheter complications, translational research and the latest in innovation, as well as access planning from a surgical perspective. This will be a unique opportunity for interactive learning between the audience and speakers.

Critical Care Nephrology – Basics for the Practicing Nephrologists

Session 235

Chair: Kathleen Liu, MD

Workshop Description: This workshop will allow participants to develop their knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts of critical care as relevant to nephrology practice. Specific topics to be covered include fluid and vasopressor management in shock, ventilator management, and management issues related to critical illness and acute kidney injury in elderly patients.

Saturday, May 12, 11:30am - 1:00pm

Board Review

Session 236

Presenter: Harold Szerlip, MD

Workshop Description: Test your knowledge of nephrology. Come and see how your compare to your colleagues. During this workshop you will have the opportunity to answer 30 Board-type questions that will cover a wide range of topics include electrolytes, acid-base, AKI, acute and chronic dialysis, CKD management and transplantation. Responses will be anonymously tallied using an audience response system. You are guaranteed to have fun and learn at the same time!

Kidney Stones 101

Presenters: R. Allan Jhagroo, MD, Kamel Kamel, MD, and Stephen Knohl, MD

Workshop Description: This workshop is designed to provide a evidence based background for recurrent kidney stone prevention. Nutritional recommendations and their true impact on kidney stone formation will be discussed. Medical drug therapy will also be reviewed with regard to stone formation. In addition cases will be reviewed for diagnosis and management by nutritional and medical means.

Secondary and Resistant Hypertension

Session 238

Chair: John Sperati, MD

Presenters: Rajiv Agarwal, MD, George Bakris, MD, and Raymond Townsend, MD

Workshop Description: This workshop will address various methods of blood pressure measurement to better identify and treat patients with resistant hypertension. Utilizing this knowledge, participants will then work through several case scenarios with leading hypertension experts to refine the participants' ability to diagnose and manage patients with secondary and resistant hypertension.

In addition, approaches to the optimal management of bone marrow transplant recipients who develop renal complications and those transplant recipients of solid organs with chronic kidney disease will be addressed.

Weight Loss Management in CKD

Session 240

Chair: Adam Whaley-Connell, MD

Presenters: Holly Kramer, MD, Kirsten Johansen, MD, and Nina Kolbe, RD

Workshop Description: Obesity continues to be a very difficult problem that many patients with kidney disease battle. This session provides healthcare providers a few critical tools to facilitate weight loss in patients with kidney disease. Experts in the fields of nutrition and exercise discuss methods to help patients lose weight through diet and exercise. When diet and exercise fail, some patients may proceed with bariatric surgery. Thus it is imperative that healthcare providers understand the pros and cons of bariatric surgery for weight loss management.
