SOCIAL WORKER PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Fistulas, Fluid Restrictions, Frustrations and Phobias –Unleashing Relaxation Therapy Applications within the CKD Trajectory
Tuesday, April 13, 2010 | 7:30 am – 12:00 pm
Course Director: Gary Petingola, RSW
Session 420, 4.0 credits
Target Audience:
Nephrology social workers.
Course Description:
This presentation will provide Nephrology Social Workers with evidence based techniques specific to the Chronic Kidney Disease trajectory from diagnosis to palliation. Last year’s CM09 presentation on Relaxation Therapy introduced conference delegates to a Clinical Social Worker’s research in validating relaxation therapy as an adjunct intervention with patients and caregivers; examined the perceptions and practices of Nephrology Social Workers and Nephrologists in Canada and the United States; and verified the aspiration of implementing Relaxation Therapy in the overall treatment plan with patients and caregivers. Participation in this half day workshop will augment the skill set that participants already have in utilizing Relaxation Therapy in their practices; empower clinicians to explore further use of relaxation techniques in conventional settings; and increase awareness of Relaxation therapy as an effective complementary treatment in Nephrology.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the CKD trajectory for targeted Relaxation Therapy applications with patients and caregivers
- Practice Relaxation Therapy to improve current clinical practice with enhanced confidence and skill set
- Dialogue and reflect with Nephrology colleagues in understanding how Relaxation Therapy can be maximized as a strategic treatment option with diverse physical and emotional trauma
- Be introduced to the power of Relaxation Therapy as a mechanism for self care
