Donald W. Seldin Distinguised Award

The Donald W. Seldin Award was established to recognize excellence in clinical nephrology in the tradition of one of the foremost teachers and researchers in the field, Dr. Donald W. Seldin. The 2010 award recipient is Fredric L. Coe, MD, FACP, FASN.

Dr. Fredric L. Coe

Dr. Fredric L. CoeFredric Coe is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago (UC). He received his college and medical school degrees at UC, and completed his internship, and residency, and chief medical residency at Michael Reese Hospital (MRH) in Chicago. He served as Captain USAF at the School of Aerospace Medicine, San Antonio, where he published his first experimental papers on renal excretion of weak bases and renal hypertrophy. His renal fellowship was in the laboratory of Dr Donald Seldin, University of Texas, Dallas. During 29 years as Section Chief of Nephrology, MRH and UC, and Director of the Joint UC MRH Renal Program, he trained 89 fellows, of whom a number are nationally recognized authorities in renal medicine, and research, and for the past 10 years he has directed an NIH funded writing seminar for young investigators who spend 2 years each developing their first research proposals. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.

Dr. Coe opened his Kidney Stone Clinic and Laboratory in 1969 and since has personally cared for over 4,000 patients with this disease. His research has been funded by NIH research grants throughout his career and has published over 375 research papers, reviews, chapters, and books, along with a number of poems. His research has focused on mineral disorders related to kidney stone disease, and on the clinical and laboratory features of such patients. In 1995, he founded Litholink Corp in order to proliferate high quality laboratory testing for patients with kidney stone disease, and developed sophisticated computer algorithms to help guide physicians in their treatment. To date Litholink has served over 250,000 stone patients. Since the sale of Litholink to LabCorp in 2007, he has applied these techniques to a national CKD program, in collaboration with NKF, designed to help US physicians implement KDOQI and KDIGO guidelines in their practices. Dr Coe received, among other awards, the American Society of Nephrology Belding Scribner Award for Lifetime Achievement in Clinical Investigation, the University of Chicago Distinguished Service Award, and the Lifetime Achievement award for Nephrolithiasis Research of the World Congress of Nephrolithiasis.
