National Kidney Foundation Launches Pediatric Kidney Disease Educational Program

Children and young adults who are diagnosed with kidney failure face a lifelong challenge, along with their families. Developmental milestones such as walking, making friends and playing sports can be altered and delayed and the financial and emotional stress experienced by many parents often leads to anxiety and grief. To help support these families, the National Kidney Foundation's Council of Nephrology Social Workers (CNSW) has developed an online Pediatric Toolkit containing comprehensive information geared for the pediatric nephrology social workers who care for them.

"The pediatric nephrology social worker plays a significant role in establishing the tone for the entire health care team's relationship with the patient and family, in providing services and addressing the multiple concerns faced by these children and families, " says Camille Yuscak, LCSW-R and lead editor. "Issues of dual family structure, custody and, on occasion, the need for state child protective services, are complicated by medication and dialysis schedules. Through the online toolkit, CNSW will arm pediatric social workers with the resources necessary to be successful."

The online toolkit covers the following topics:

Pediatric Essentials, highlighting social work interventions and offering case studies as illustrations;

Assessment,  including an overview of pediatric nephrology social work assessment and a sample assessment tool for adaptation by individual units;

Grief and Loss, providing a thorough overview of the multiple layers of the grief process in pediatric nephrology social work;

Insurance, offering information on a range of insurance issues, including Medicare eligibility and concerns relating to the care of uninsured and undocumented patients

Additional toolkit resources to be developed will include school-related issues, child abuse/neglect and advanced directives. The toolkit also features a feedback option enabling CNSW to gain input from its audience that will help with the ongoing development of user-friendly content.
