William F. Keane, MD, of San Antonio, Texas, was named the 2009 Donald W. Seldin Award Winner, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) announced today.
Dr. Keane is Chief Medical Officer at SENO Medical Instruments of San Antonio, Texas. A nationally-recognized expert on kidney disease and nephrology, he has served on the editorial board of Kidney International, has authored more than 300 scientific papers and served as past president of the National Kidney Foundation.
The Donald W. Seldin Award, presented by the National Kidney Foundation, recognizes excellence in clinical nephrology in the tradition of Dr. Donald Seldin, one of the foremost teachers and researchers in the field.
"Dr. Keane's work literally re-shaped the direction of the NKF. He was responsible for expanding the focus of the organization from treating kidney failure patients with dialysis to encompass the entire spectrum of chronic kidney disease, with the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) that has had a major impact on patient care," said Bryan Becker, MD, NKF President.
Dr. Keane was previously Chief Medical Officer at Reliant Pharmaceuticals. He has served as Vice President of US Medical and Scientific Affairs at Merck, Inc. and served as Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Hennepin Medical Center, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
"Dr. Keane has made many significant contributions to nephrology, most notably, the central role he played in a landmark clinical trial, RENAAL, that provided the opportunity to study kidney and cardiovascular outcomes, risk predictors and cost effectiveness in over 1,500 patients with Type 2 diabetes and kidney disease,” said Allan Collins, MD, FACP, United States Renal Data System (USRDS) Principal Investigator and NKF Immediate Past President.
“Having Dr. Keane join the Seno team as Chief Medical Officer provides enormous benefit to our company with his knowledge and breadth of medical and industry experience. We are pleased that his medical colleagues recognize his contributions to the field of medicine.” says Janet Campbell, Chairman and CEO of Seno Medical Instruments, Inc.
