The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) announced today that UpToDate, an electronic clinical reference on CD-ROM and online, will disseminate the K/DOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines, 2000 Update for Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis Adequacy, Vascular Access and Anemia, as well as the K/DOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines for Nutrition in Chronic Renal Failure. As a contributing sponsor of DOQI implementation since 1998, UpToDate has been instrumental in the dissemination of NKF-DOQI guidelines, which were published in 1997.
“Implementation and the widest possible dissemination of the guidelines is a major goal and a hallmark of the K/DOQI process. We don’t just publish books,” said NKF Chief Executive Officer John Davis. “Our goal is to get the guidelines in the hands of those people who can change outcomes for our patients,” Mr. Davis added.
“We’d like to thank Amgen for serving as the founding and principal sponsor of the NKF K/DOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines and we are always looking for opportunities to work with our implementation partners such as UpToDate on important outreach and educational activities,” he continued.
The K/DOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines 2000 Update for Hemodialysis Adequacy, Peritoneal Dialysis Adequacy, Vascular Access and Anemia were published in a January supplement to the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
“UpToDate is pleased to continue its sponsorship of the implementation of K/DOQI,” said Burton Rose, MD, editor-in-chief of UpToDate. “The availability of NKF guidelines and reports within UpToDate allows practicing nephrologists to easily access these guidelines at the point of care,” Dr. Rose added.
Over the next three years, as an implementation partner, UpToDate will also disseminate the report from the NKF Task Force on Cardiovascular Disease, according to Dr. Rose. The report is entitled, “Controlling the Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease in Chronic Renal Failure: What Do We Know? What Do We Need to Learn? Where Do We Go From Here?”
The National Kidney Foundation, a major voluntary health organization, seeks to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation. Through its affiliates nationwide, the foundation conducts programs in research, professional education, patient and community services, public education and organ donation. The work of the National Kidney Foundation is funded by public donations.
