Dear Abby, aka Jeanne Phillips, was recently elected to the National Kidney Foundation’s Board of Directors.
Dear Abby is the most widely syndicated newspaper column in any genre in the world. In addition to print, Dear Abby regularly appears on news and entertainment broadcast media. Although Ms. Phillips had been writing Dear Abby since 1987, she publicly assumed the pen name of Abigail Van Buren in July 2002. In August 2002, it was announced that her mother, Pauline Phillips, the founder of the column, suffers with Alzheimer’s disease.
As a result of her mother’s condition, Ms. Phillips is an advocate of the Alzheimer’s Association. She also has a special interest in organ donation, a topic that she has included in her advice columns.
According to Ms. Phillips, “It’s a great honor for me to serve on the National Kidney Foundation’s board. Letters I receive from people who suffer from this disease are always full of courage and hope for the future. I want to do my share to educate, inform and inspire a cure, and to encourage the gift of life – organ donation.”
The National Kidney Foundation is dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.
