In a partnership aimed at addressing one of the most common conditions troubling women today urinary tract infections (UTIs) the National Kidney Foundation and Ocean Spray announced today an educational initiative aimed at helping spread awareness about UTIs and how to prevent them. The new partnership includes the funding of research examining the cause of UTIs, and the role of diet and behavior in managing this condition. To further communicate their partnership, The National Kidney Foundation logo will appear on the labels of all of Ocean Spray cranberry juice drink bottles.
Recent studies have shown that drinking cranberry juice cocktail twice daily may help prevent UTIs, which account for 11 million doctor visits each year. Both partners will distribute free educational materials developed by the National Kidney Foundation via the foundation's website, www.kidney.org and through Ocean Spray's Consumer Helpline at 800-662-3263. Ocean Spray also will provide cranberry juice cocktail at the foundation's Kidney Walks and Kidney Early Evaluation Program screenings throughout the country.
"UTIs occur in the bladder, but if not treated promptly, they can spread to the kidneys, causing a more serious infection," says John Davis, NKF CEO. "We are excited to partner with Ocean Spray to offer prevention tips that will reach millions of women, causing widespread awareness of this common and painful, but preventable condition."
"Because of cranberry juice cocktail's unique health benefits, Ocean Spray has always had an interest in promoting urinary tract health," said Stu Gallagher, Ocean Spray's Vice President of Cranberry Beverages. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with the National Kidney Foundation, an organization with a long history of providing quality public education programs and services."
The National Kidney Foundation is the nation's largest voluntary agency dedicated to preventing and treating kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.
