Kidney patients on a restricted diet now have a roadmap for eating outside their own homes that should make this simple pleasure a piece of cake. "Dining Out with Confidence: A Guide for Renal Patients" is a newly-updated brochure from the National Kidney Foundation that includes information about making good meal choices in ethnic and fast food restaurants.
In simple language, the publication explains how to plan ahead and make special requests and offers detailed guidelines for appropriate food selection for all courses throughout the meal. Specific examples of better choices and poor choices are given for appetizers, salad bars, entrees, side dishes and desserts. Additionally, the tips for eating out in ethnic restaurants cover a wide variety of cultural preferences, including Mexican, French, Chinese, Japanese, Asian Indian and Italian. Guidelines for eating soul food and fast food on a renal diet are offered as well.
