Recent studies have shown that drinking cranberry juice cocktail can help prevent one of the most common conditions plaguing women of all ages, the urinary tract infection (UTI), which accounts for 10 million doctor visits each year. To help spread awareness about UTIs and how to prevent them, the National Kidney Foundation has joined forces with Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. in a new partnership dedicated to promoting urinary tract health.
The new initiative will include the development of an informative brochure covering the causes, symptoms, preventative measures, necessary testing and treatment for UTIs, which will be distributed free to the public. Additionally, a pharmacy program is being implemented at 7,000 pharmacies nationwide, offering important information about UTIs to women filling prescriptions for antibiotics to treat this condition.
"UTIs occur in the bladder, but if not treated promptly, they can spread to the kidneys, causing a more serious infection," says John Davis, NKF CEO. "We are excited to partner with Ocean Spray to offer prevention tips that will reach millions of women, causing widespread awareness of this common and painful, but preventable condition."
"Because of the benefits of cranberry juice cocktail, Ocean Spray has always had an interest in promoting urinary health," said Robert Hawthorne, Ocean Spray's CEO. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with the National Kidney Foundation, an organization with a long history of providing quality public education on prevention of both kidney and urinary diseases."
The National Kidney Foundation is the nation's largest voluntary agency dedicated to preventing and treating kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation. Information on kidney and related diseases is available from the foundation at 800-622-9010.
