Medicare
Medicare is a critical source of health care coverage for kidney disease patients. About half of all new kidney patients have Medicare because of age or disability. In addition, the Medicare End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Program provides coverage for individuals with advanced (Stage 5) kidney disease, who require regular dialysis or a kidney transplant to live.
The NKF played an active role in the development and implementation of the Medicare Prescription Drug and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA). We continue to work closely with the Congress and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to ensure that Medicare benefits meet the diverse needs of kidney disease patients.
