Runners Fill Streets of Pittsburgh for 5K Transplant Games Road Race
By Ashleigh Chicko
It was an early morning for the 1500 participants, including transplant patients, their families, and locals running in the 5K Transplant Games Road Race. The race began at 6 a.m. and was followed by a penne breakfast provided by Fred DelGrosso, of DelGrosso Italian foods.
The participants varied from babies to bustling athletes and even grandparents. The spaghetti breakfast was concluded with a very deserving awards ceremony for both the transplant athletes and public athletes. The two fastest overall times were Cory Spidell, 22, with a time of 15:05 and Sonia Navarro, 33, with a time of 15:44. Both athletes were part of the public athlete group and came out to support the games and raise awareness.
The exciting event ended with the medal ceremony, where pro snowboarder Chris Klug, C.O.R.E director (Center for Organ Recovery and Education) Susan Stewart, transplant recipient and breakfast sponsor Fred DelGrosso, Astellas rep Kevin Fowler, and National Kidney Foundation executive director Deb Hartman, handed out medals along with well-deserved congratulations.
