Why Attend?

Participants from all walks of life find the Games to be a unique and rewarding experience. Here is what some attendees have to say about the event…

  • The friendships that have been developed over the years, meeting new people and hearing their stories are a few of the most rewarding aspects of the Games. The competition is fun and it’s a great way to show what organ recipients can do. I think the Games are one of the best things I get to do every two years.” – Mike Strauss, Transplant Athlete, Team Mo–Kan

  • “It was a most valuable healing experience. It gave us so much hope, healing and passion for moving forward in our lives after our loss. The sadness and loss will always be there but attending the Games and seeing such enthusiasm and life helped us feel grateful that our son had the opportunity to give the gift of life.” –Mary Jo Rozmenoski, Donor Family, Team Wisconsin

  • “The Transplant Games is completely different than traditional conventions. For us, it’s about community and social responsibility, not product awareness. In fact, we didn't even have one mention of our product at the exhibit hall. “ – 2008 Games Sponsor

  • “Overall, the spirit of the event was positive and the staff and participants showed a lot of energy and passion for the cause. I was proud to be a part of it.” – Justin Miller, Volunteer

  • “[The Games] gave me reassurance as a transplant coordinator that what I do is valuable! To see donors and recipients celebrating life together was an honor. A memory I will treasure for the rest of my life!” – Ashley Bird, Professional, Team Georgia

  • “The Coffeehouse enabled me to hear stories and better understand the experiences and feelings of donor families. The donor quilt gave me a new perspective and enabled me to change the way I look at things in my life and to forgive individuals with whom I was upset. The Games also changed the minds of some of my family members and friends about organ donation.” – Hilary Hoagwood, Transplant Athlete, Team Nation’s Capital

  • “This experience, by far, was the most humbling and rewarding experience of my life. I donated my kidney to my father in 2006, and two years later seeing him compete was incredible. Running the 5K was an accomplishment for me. It was incredible seeing everyone running/walking for such a good cause. The camaraderie of all the athletes, families, supporters was unbelievable.” – Marie Antoinette Eraso, Living Donor, Team North Texas

Never been to the Games? Great! There is no better time than the present to join your local team. Your transplant games family is waiting to meet you. But don’t take our word for it. Here’s one kidney recipient’s first–time experience…

“I found it to be a wonderful experience! This was the first time since my transplant [in 2006] that I had been exposed to other transplant recipients and it helped me so much. Just to be around so many others that have experienced what I have was comforting and reassuring. It felt like family. I had no trouble walking up to complete strangers and introducing myself and welcoming them to Pittsburgh. The pin trading offered the perfect excuse to meet people and was just way too much fun. I have made some friends that I will have for the rest of my life through the Games. It was so amazing to see people that would not be here at all if not for a transplant, that are healthy enough to be running, swimming, playing golf, tennis, basketball and so much more. The Transplant Games epitomizes hope and strength.” – Michele Barnes, Transplant Athlete, Team Pittsburgh
