Guideline Development and Methodology

An important aspect of KDOQI guideline development is the rigorous methodologic process and Core Principles that are used. This process below led to the widespread acceptance and adoption of the original DOQI guidelines by the medical community. It continues to lend equal credibility to each new KDOQI guideline and facilitates their implementation.

Evidence-Based Approach

A state-of-the-art evidence-based approach is used for the development of each of the KDOQI guideline components. To ensure methodological rigor, an independent consultant is used to conduct an exhaustive literature search to uncover current medical opinion. The resulting evidence report is then submitted to the multidisciplinary Work Group for critical appraisal and grading. Based on the consensus of the Work Group, a set of guidelines are developed to address areas supported by key findings in the evidence report.

Three-Stage Review Process

Three phases of review are used in the KDOQI guideline development process to ensure that the interests and need of the medical community and patients are fully met. Stage One is an internal review: the proposed guidelines are reviewed by the KDOQI Advisory Board, KDOQI Support Group, and various NKF Committees. Stage Two is an organizational review: the proposed guidelines are submitted for comment to individuals designated by key allied health professional associations and organizations involved in the care of patients with kidney disease. Comments are considered by the Work Group chairs and the guidelines are adapted as neceessary. Stage Three is an open review: the guidelines are made available to the public for comment.
