KDOQI (Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative)

Special Projects

The March 2004 issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases features a special report devoted to the issue of bone and mineral metabolism in chronic kidney disease. The four articles in this special report are the outcome of NKF's Controversies in Mineral Metabolism and Bone Disease in Chronic Kidney Disease Conference.

The conference took place on March 14-16, 2003 in Washington, DC. Meeting objectives included:

As a result of the conference, the NKF Global Bone and Mineral Initiative (GBMI) has been launched under the leadership of Sharon Moe, MD and Tilman Drüeke, MD. GBMI will undertake educational and research efforts in bone and mineral metabolism in CKD to work towards advancing the care of patients.

More information about the conference proceedings and the major issues that were addressed can be found in the March 2004 Special Report in AJKD.

Proteinuria Conference
A conference entitled 'Proteinuria and Other Markers of Chronic Kidney Disease: Perspectives on Clinical Practice, Trials, and Research Needs' was held on October 8 and 9, 2002 in Washington, DC. The conference was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) /National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

The meeting addressed the following issues:

  1. Standards for clinical measurement
  2. Utility of Proteinuria as an outcome measure
  3. Research needs for improving its credibility as an outcome marker
  4. Research needs for new markers

The participants discussed and deliberated on the information presented in order to reach a summary consensus on a series of issues for Proteinuria.

An article (PDF* 115Kb) was compiled, written, edited and reviewed by presenters and authors from the conference. An AJKD paper will be published in Summer 2003.

Carnitine Consensus Conference
The Carnitine Consensus Conference, sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation, was held on September 8-10, 2002 in Chicago. Co-chaired by Garabed Eknoyan, MD and Jill Lindberg, MD, this consensus meeting was structured to allow 18 experts on Carnitine therapy present scientific and clinical data on the effects of Carnitine on dialysis patients both metabolically and clinically. The participants then discussed and deliberated on the information presented in order to reach a consensus on a series of best clinical practice recommendations for the appropriate use of carnitine therapy.

The Summary Proceedings and Supplement were compiled, written, edited and reviewed by presenters and authors from the conference and an AJKD supplement was published in April 2003.
