Organ Transplant Pioneer

David E.R. Sutherland, MD, PhD

A passion for giving patients back their quality of life has been the driving force behind David Sutherland’s achievements and innovations in the field of transplantation. Dr. Sutherland has dedicated the past 30 years to research toward curing diabetes. He is the Director of the Diabetes Institute for Immunology and Transplantation and is head of the Division of Transplantation at the University of Minnesota, the largest and oldest pancreas transplant program in the world. Dr. Sutherland pioneered the therapy of pancreas transplantation as a treatment for diabetes and has also contributed heavily to the development of islet transplantation. More than 1,000 pancreas and islet transplants have been performed under his direction.
