Marathon Runner NKF

Last year, in honor of my daughter, Kristen, who received my kidney in June of 2005, I fulfilled a life long dream of running a marathon non-stop. It was the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington D.C. This year, I am running the New York City Marathon (Bib Number TBD) on November 1, 2009.

Four and a half years ago, we had the shock of our lives when we suddenly and totally unexpectedly found out that our 15 year old daughter, Kristen, was in kidney failure. In March 2005 Kristen went to her school nurse’s office to have her blood pressure tested for extra credit in Biology. She exhibited a very high blood pressure. Kristen was admitted to the intensive care unit at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center where she stayed for 5 days while they evaluated her and reduced her blood pressure with medication. Almost immediately, the team, led by Dr. Rasoulpour, suspected a kidney problem. The tests revealed that her kidneys never developed from an early age. This condition would require a transplant or dialysis, within the next few months. Fortunately, tests determined that I, her father, was a donor match and surgery was scheduled. We could only hope that Kristen would have enough time to recover and be on the Glastonbury High School varsity soccer team, one of her goals. Because of the miracle of kidney transplantation, Kristen has been able to do everything she wanted to do in High School, and today she is a sophomore at Trinity College, where she is thrilled to be on the Women’s soccer team.

Please consider honoring Kristen by making a donation to the National Kidney Foundation of CT. The NKF is committed to the detection, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease by bringing hope and help to those afflicted. Your donation will help generate revenue that will be used to fund lifesaving research, provide services to Connecticut kidney patients and their families, and educate the public about the need for organ donation.

Once my Bib Number is provided shortly before the race, you can track my progress during the marathon via the Marathon-Tracker link also to be provided. Please be sure to include the Bib Number, which will be required for the tracking site.

Kristen and our entire family are extremely grateful for your support. Thank you.
