Kidney Health Risk Assessment (KHRA)

What is a KHRA?

A Kidney Health Risk Assessment (KHRA) is a public education service that measures an individual's risk for developing chronic kidney disease. The assessment includes six stations:

  1. Welcome & Consent
  2. Height & Weight Measurement
  3. Blood Pressure Measurement
  4. Brief Questionnairre
  5. Consultation and
  6. Educational Materials

What is the NBC4 Health & Fitness Expo?

In its 20th year, the NBC4 Health & Fitness Expo has grown to become the largest free consumer health event in the country with close to 200 exhibitors, demonstrations, giveaways and much more. Over 87,000 attendees participate during the two-day event.

What do you need for me to do?

General Volunteers (no medical experience necessary) will welcome participants, help with line control, assist with questionnaires and hand out educational materials at resource center.

Medical Professionals (Based on your credentials you'll be assigned to an appropriate station.)

  • Nurses (RNs, LPNs), Technicians, Medical Students will take blood pressure measurement and Body Mass Index calculations
  • Social Workers will assist with questionnaires and the resource center
  • Dietitians will assist at BMI measurment station and the resource center
  • MDs, DOs, PAs, and NPs will provide brief consultations to review participants' risk factors

What time can I volunteer?

The Expo is on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17. We've broken the event into four shifts:

Shift #1: Saturday, March 16: 8:15 am - 1:00 pm

Shift #2: Saturday, March 16: 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Shift #3: Sunday, March 17: 8:15 am - 1:00 pm

Shift #4: Sunday, March 17: 12:30 pm - 5:30 pm

What do I wear?

NKF will supply t-shirts for volunteers. Wear comfortable shoes. Scrubs are acceptable. MD, PAs, NPs providing consultations please feel free to wear a white lab coat.

Will meals be provided?

Bottled water and light snacks (granola bar, apple, etc.) will be provided. Volunteers are responsible for expenses for additional food and beverages.

How do I get there?

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is located between 7th and 9th Streets and N Street and Mt. Vernon Place in downtown DC. The metro station on the yellow line is Mt. Vernon Square/ 7th St-Convention Center. You can also walk from the Metro Center station on the red line.
