New License Plate Design Promotes Early CKD Detection

Friends and supporters of the National Kidney Foundation of North Carolina (NKFNC) will soon be able to publicize their support with a new kidney license plate.
The NKFNC is accepting applications and payment for the first 300 license plates that feature the foundation’s logo and Saving Lives Today tagline.
There is a $30 fee for the plate in addition to regular license fees of the Division of Motor Vehicles. The fee is $60 for a personalized kidney plate. Funds raised from the specialized plate will support early Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) education and prevention efforts.
Saving Lives Today is a new outreach initiative aimed at bringing a comprehensive screening and awareness program to all 100 counties in North Carolina.
“We know we can make a significant impact in controlling CKD with early intervention and education. The new specialized plate will be a rolling billboard for our efforts to reduce the burden of CKD and save lives,” said Melia Lyerly, NKFNC Board of Directors Chairman.
The new plate is thanks in part to Jeff Sigmon of Newton, a kidney transplant recipient and NKFNC volunteer who contacted Representative Mitch Gillespie with the original request. Sigmon explains, “I wanted to make this plate available not only to generate more revenue for the NKFNC but to also make the NKFNC more visible throughout the state. These plates being displayed on vehicles will hopefully initiate questions which lead to more involvement and awareness of kidney donation.”
Once the minimum 300 initial applications are received, processing and mailing of the new plates should begin within 90 days, and thereafter, plates will be produced and mailed directly from the Division of Motor Vehicles.
