A Day for Empowerment and Education is an opportunity to bring together anyone affected by kidney disease (pre-dialysis, dialysis, transplant, living donors, care givers and family members) to learn from each other on topics which concern the patient and their entire family.
Personal stories will be shared and medical professional will be on hand to educate attendees on real life issues faced by those affected by kidney disease. This open forum allows for patients, their friends and family members, to learn from experts and each other on topics related to kidney disease and real life. This event is presented by the National Kidney Foundation and welcomes all people impacted by CKD, dialysis and kidney transplantation.
New for 2014: the National Kidney Foundation will be working with individual nephrology, dialysis and transplant units to nominate patients to receive the Kidney Courage Awards. Patients or caregivers can be nominated for any reason the unit and staff would like them to be recognized. Awards will be distributed throughout the event.
Chronic Kidney Disease Patient Education Sessions
Local health care providers and patients affected by chronic kidney disease will present three to four topics for discussion. Possible topics for 2014 include:
- Diet and Nutrition
- Transplantation Process
- Living with a Chronic Illness
- Modality Options
Patients, family members and/or caregivers will share their personal story and journey with kidney disease. A medical professional will then present on the topic related to the personal story. Attendees will be encouraged to ask questions and share their own experiences with how the topic relates to them. The goal of the group discussions is empowerment and connection between the patients and caregivers.
Who will attend? Registration materials will be distributed statewide to dialysis units, dialysis patients, nephrologists, transplant centers, organ donors, transplant recipients and more. We anticipate 100+ patients, family members, caregivers and health care professionals to attend the education event.
