Annual Report
From the 2008 Annual Report:
Dear Friends,
As a practicing nephrologist, I see first hand the negative effects kidney disease has on the lives of patients and their families. This is why I am committed to the National Kidney Foundation of the National Capital Area (NKF/NCA) and its fight to end the disease.
Our community is in serious crisis when it comes to kidney disease. In the Washington metro area, more than 700,000 people have the disease and approximately 5,800 people are on dialysis. Additionally, more than 1,600 individuals are waiting for kidney transplants. These numbers are staggering but the NKF/NCA continues to work diligently to improve the lives of patients and their families through community services and education programs.
Our local Knock Out Kidney Disease Program (KOKD), which employs the national Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) screening protocol, offers comprehensive screening and follow-up care for those with risk factors, in addition to physician education for those serving the population in need. Since 1999, the Prevention Programs have screened approximately 17,000 people to determine their risk for development of kidney disease. Of those people screened in our area, 90% had a least one abnormal test result including diabetes, blood and/or protein in the urine, elevated blood glucose or high blood pressure.
Unfortunately, the national statistics are not much better. More than 26 million Americans live with kidney and urinary tract diseases and annually, more than 70,000 people die from these diseases. Many forms of kidney disease do not produce symptoms until the latter stages, however there are warning signs that people must be aware of in order to prevent and treat the disease as early as possible. If kidney disease is detected in stages 1-3, progression to end-stage kidney disease (stage 5) can be delayed or prevented. Unfortunately, at stage 5, the only option for survival is dialysis or a kidney transplant.
The Foundation is indebted for the tremendous support from YOU – our volunteers, donors, and supporters who have given your time, talent, and energy to help us fight kidney disease in our area. I am extremely grateful for your support because without it, we would never have been able to accomplish what we did last year. Together we have made great strides in the fight against kidney disease and I am confident that we will continue to do so in 2009 and beyond.
Sincerely,

Jeffrey A. Perlmutter, MD

Our Founder
On November 15, 1950, Mr. and Mrs. Harry DeBold called the first meeting of the Committee for Nephrosis Research. Several months earlier, Mrs. DeBold’s infant son was stricken with nephrosis, a condition of which little was known and for which little could be done. Her determination not to succumb to the grim reality of her son’s disease and her affluence and wealth were important elements which led to the formation of the inaugural lay group destined to becomeThe National Kidney Foundation. The Ada DeBold Society was created to help ensure the philanthropic future of the NKF in honor of Mrs. Ada U. DeBold.
By sharing their financial resources and publicly expressing their support, members of The Ada DeBold Society address NKF’s mission to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation. This framework of support helps the NKF plan for the present and look to the future. More information about The Ada DeBold Society.
