Educate your elementary school children - to give students a better understanding of normal kidneys and what happens when kidneys fail. They will learn about kidney disease, dialysis, transplantation and organ donation. This is designed as an interactive, fun experience. ![]()
Patient Assistance Grants
A long-term illness such as kidney failure takes its toll both physically and financially on kidney patients. The NKF Serving Maine provides assistance to kidney patients and transplant recipients in need. Patient Assistance Grants are available as a one-time emergency request.
The NKFM offers financial assistance for help with heating oil, medications, transportation to and from dialysis, housing, food, and other material needs (glasses, dentures, utilities, etc.). To apply for these funds, patients must contact their dialysis center social worker and submit applicable receipts.
Nutrition Fund Grants
NKF Serving Maine offers financial assistance for dialysis patients through the Nutritionist at each dialysis center. It is vital to being part of the team that improves the quality of life for patients affected by renal disease. Our Foundation remains deeply committed to assisting patients with the high costs associated with kidney disease.

Organ Donation Cards
Organ and tissue donation is a true gift of life. It is the most precious gift any of us can give. Today's medical technology enables us to prolong and save the lives of many people through transplantation. Without donation, however, we cannot provide this opportunity to the thousands of people who are currently waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.
To receive your free donor card,email jaime.hanks@kidney.org or call (800) 639-7220 or (207) 772-7270.
Patient Discounts
If you are a business owner and would like to donate a service, coupons, or post a promotion for the people of Maine who suffer from chronic kidney disease, please email Tammy Atwood.
Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP)
Ten years ago, the National Kidney Foundation established the Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP). Since then nearly 100,000 Americans have been tested at free public health screenings throughout the country*. In addition to reaching individuals at increased risk of kidney disease, the program's structured data collection provides an opportunity to leverage what we know about kidney disease with health departments, elected officials, managed care and insurance companies and medical societies; in turn influencing public health policies and practices. (*The screenings are organized by NKF affiliates and divisions.) ![]()
World Kidney Day and Public Education
To elevate public awareness about kidney disease as a critical public health problem the National Kidney Foundation and our Greater New York Division organize a range of educational and outreach activities during 'March is National Kidney Month' and 'World Kidney Day.'
Thanks to a grant from Abbott we launched a new grassroots initiative in 2007 called the World Kidney Day Campaign to generate awareness in each community. With information and materials from our campaign kits, volunteers throughout the region helped organize public awareness programs to identify the risks of kidney disease and the benefits of early detection.
Learn how you can raise awareness in your community on World Kidney Day, March 12, 2009!
