Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP)
Ten years ago, the National Kidney Foundation established the Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP). Since then nearly 100,000 Americans have been tested at free public health screenings throughout the country*. In addition to reaching individuals at increased risk of kidney disease, the program's structured data collection provides an opportunity to leverage what we know about kidney disease with health departments, elected officials, managed care and insurance companies and medical societies; in turn influencing public health policies and practices. (*The screenings are organized by NKF affiliates and divisions.) ![]()
World Kidney Day and Public Education
To elevate public awareness about kidney disease as a critical public health problem the National Kidney Foundation and our Greater New York Division organize a range of educational and outreach activities during 'March is National Kidney Month' and 'World Kidney Day.'
Thanks to a grant from Abbott we launched a new grassroots initiative in 2007 called the World Kidney Day Campaign to generate awareness in each community. With information and materials from our campaign kits, volunteers throughout the region helped organize public awareness programs to identify the risks of kidney disease and the benefits of early detection.
Learn how you can raise awareness in your community on World Kidney Day, March 13, 2008!
Read about World Kidney Day in our Fall 2007 newsletter.
Public Awareness – Sports Events
For the past several years we have held Kidney Awareness events during games at Shea Stadium and the Nassau Coliseum. These public awareness programs have included recognition on the field, display of public service announcements regarding kidney disease on the jumbotron, information tables, and onsite radio interviews.

Research
NKF to double research funding from $2.8 to $5.6 million in five years
"Our Board of Directors expects a new reorganization plan to bring additional success and financial resources to the NKF. We plan to dedicate a significant portion of those new funds to our most important scientific priority: the funding of research." Chuck Fruit, NKF Chairman.
NKF funds young scientists around the U.S. in three categories: research fellowships, Young Investigator grants and Clinical Scientist awards. Top areas of research include chronic kidney disease, hemodialysis, high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and pediatric kidney disease. Since the inception of NKF's research program in 1968, the foundation has funded the work of more than 800 scientists.
Our Greater New York Division has helped fund research fellowships
…in 2007 for Jeffrey Hodgin, MD, for his study "Molecular Profiling of Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis by Gene Expression Analysis of Laser-Captured Glomeruli" and Odysse Michos, MD, for his study "Regulation of Ureteric Bud Outgrowth and Branching."
In 2006 we funded two-year fellowships for Markus Bitzer, MD at Albert Einstein College of Medicine for his study "Urinary Markers for Progressive Renal Fibrosis;" Cristina Cebrian, MD, at Columbia University for her study "Modulation of Kidney Development by Pea3 and Erm;" and Stephanie Krick, MD, at Mount Sinai Medical Center for her study "Role of Peroxisomal Proteins in Oxidative Stress Pathways in Diabetic Nephropathy."
