Volunteer Opportunities
Health Fairs
The NKF of Indiana, Inc. (NKFI) participates in many health fairs throughout Indiana. The goal is to promote early intervention and prevention of kidney disease, and awareness of organ donation. These fairs are part of events held by churches, businesses, schools and community groups. Some fairs are held for a specific population group such as Hispanics, African Americans, or American Indians.
We need both health professional and non-health professional volunteers that represent all population groups. Volunteers may pass out brochures and talk to health fair visitors about kidney disease, organ donation and the NKFI. Also, at some of the fairs we perform blood pressure checks using an automatic inflatable cuff and machine that displays blood pressure results. We can provide training at our office on the brochures and how to perform and interpret the blood pressure checks.
KEEP (Kidney Early Evaluation Program) Screenings
This is a health screening program designed to identify and educate individuals at increased risk for kidney disease to prevent or delay the onset of chronic kidney disease. During the screening, participants complete a health questionnaire and go through a series of medical tests including blood pressure, height, weight and certain blood and urine tests that can screen for high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney disease. Each participant will talk with a medical professional (physician, nurse practionar or physician assistant) to discuss his or her screening results. The following volunteers are needed to conduct a successful screening:
General or non-technical volunteers will greet and assist participants through the screening process and assure screening paperwork is completed accurately and neatly.
Technical volunteers (practicing or student health care professionals) includes nurses, medical technologists, dialysis technicians and medical students. The technical volunteers will assist with taking blood pressure measurements, recording height and weight, and performing urine tests for microalbumin, red blood cells and white blood cells. We can train interested volunteers.
Volunteer Physicians, Nurse practioner, or Physician Assistant will oversee the Exit Station of the health screening by reviewing and discussing the health questionnaire and testing results with the participants.
Kidneys in the Classroom
Volunteers are needed to assist with this interactive elementary school program for 3rd – 6th graders. The program demonstrates the importance of kidney function, dialysis and organ donation. We need kidney health professionals (renal nurses, dieticians, and social workers) to present the program using a pre-developed script. We also need kidney transplant recipients and persons on dialysis to be guest presenters and share their personal experiences with kidney disease. The program is about one hour long. Volunteers do around 2 to 5 presentations per year.
"Billy-the-Kidney"
We need energetic, fun-loving volunteers to wear our mascot, "Billy the Kidney". Billy makes appearances at various events to raise awareness about kidney disease prevention and organ donation. Events may include health fairs, community activities, schools, malls and dialysis units. Billy does not speak, but waves, dances, and interacts with onlookers.
Volunteers must read and sign a usage policy and liability waiver. Wearers must be at least 13 years old. If you are under 18 years old, a parent or guardian must sign the usage policy/liability waiver.
Office Volunteer
Volunteers will assist with basic office work including copying, preparing mass mailings, filing, sending out informational brochures, and other miscellaneous jobs.
Computer Data Entry
Volunteers will enter various records/files into the computer using a Windows based computer program.
NKFI Public Speaker
Volunteers who have personal or professional knowledge or experience regarding kidney disease and/or organ donation are needed to speak to various groups (e.g. community, church, professional) regarding kidney disease, organ donation and the NKFI.
Special Events
Special events include our Kidney Run/Walks, Cadillac Golf Tournaments, black tie galas, volleyball tournament and more. Volunteers help with set-up, registration, silent and live auctions, selling raffle tickets, tear-down and other miscellaneous jobs during the events. Call our office or check our web page or newsletter for dates and times.
