Outright Gifts
An outright gift of cash is the simplest and most popular type of charitable gift. When you make an outright gift of cash or property to the National Kidney Foundation, every dollar goes to work the moment it is donated, providing vital current support for an organization you believe in. An outright gift gives you the satisfaction of seeing your donation in action and knowing that many lives are being touched right now because you cared.

Gifts of Cash
Cash contributions paid by check or credit card are the choice of many donors to the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri. If you itemize charitable contributions on your federal income tax return, your tax savings mean that your gift costs you less than the Foundation receives. Each year you may deduct cash gifts totaling 50 percent of your adjusted gross income, and any excess deduction can be carried forward for up to five years. Depending on your marginal tax rate, your federal tax savings could equal from 15 percent to 39.6 percent of your contribution.

Example: Mary Ann Dixon, who is in the 36 percent tax bracket, writes a check for $2,000 to the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri. Because her deduction saves her $720 in taxes, the net cost of her $2,000 gift is only $1,280.

Gifts of appreciated property
Non-cash assets such as securities and real estate are also suitable as outright gifts. If the asset you give has appreciated in value, and you have owned it more than one year, you not only receive an income tax charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the property, but you also avoid all tax on the capital gain.

Example: Robert Bolek contributes shares of stock valued at $15,000 for which he paid $3,000 some years ago. If he were to sell the stock, he would be taxed $2,400 on the capital gain (20 percent of $12,000). By contributing the stock to the NKF, he avoids tax on the gain and receives an income tax charitable deduction for the current value of the stock. In his 31 percent bracket, he saves $4,650 in income taxes. His total tax savings is $7,050, and the net cost of his $15,000 gift is only $7,950.

When you give listed securities, the fair market value is the average of the high and low prices on the day the securities are transferred to NKF's account (in the case of securities held in your brokerage account), or the day they are hand-delivered or mailed (when you hold the bond or stock)

Gift Annuity
Contributing to a qualified plan such as a 401 (k), 403 (b), Keogh or IRA is an ideal way to save for retirement. Unfortunately, all these plans are subject to contribution limitations.

If you would like to supplement the payments you receive from your qualified plan and Social Security, consider a deferred gift annuity with the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri. Not only will you have more to spend in your later years, but you may reduce your income tax now. You will also help the National Kidney Foundation continue to provide needed services and programs in our community.

Unlike an employer-sponsored retirement plan, a deferred gift annuity offers the following benefits:

In the event you own your own business, you can establish a deferred gift annuity for yourself without having to include employees.

To establish a deferred gift annuity with the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri, you would transfer cash or securities to the Foundation and execute an agreement that states when payments are to begin and to whom they are to be made. Ordinarily, a single person will have payments made to them, and a married couple will elect a joint and survivor annuity. You could, however, direct the payments to augment retirement income for someone else, like a surviving sibling for example.

Remembering NKF in Your Will
When you include the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri in your will, you are using your will power to support an institution whose work you believe in. Your bequest will help the NKF build a solid funding base that will support the foundation far into the future.

If you presently have a will, you can easily add a codicil (an amendment) providing for a bequest to the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri. If you don't have a will, this is the time to prepare one. It is neither difficult nor expensive.

Tailoring your bequest to your needs and goals:

Your bequest may take any of several forms. Here are some examples, with the appropriate wording:

A general bequest is for a certain dollar amount of property, usually cash: I give to the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri the sum of $ . . . . .

A specific bequest directs that the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri is to receive a specific piece of property: I give 500 shares of XYZ stock . . . .

A residual bequest designates all or a portion of whatever remains after all debts, taxes, expenses and other bequests have been paid: I give fifty percent (50 percent) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate . . . .

A continuing bequest takes effect only under certain conditions: In the event my wife or husband, does not survive me, I give to the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri the sum of . . . .

Whichever of these forms and purposes you choose for your bequest, the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri is able and eager to assist you. The preceding codicil clauses are examples only. Please consult your attorney to assist in carrying out your wishes. Neither the National Kidney Foundation nor its affiliates are engaged in rendering legal or tax advisory services.

Charitable Remainder Trust
The charitable remainder trust provides payments for life or a term of years at a payout rate you determine in consultation with the NKF. Payments may be fixed (annuity trust) or based on the trust balance as revalued annually (unitrust). Unitrust payments can increase over time if the principal grows. You may make additional tax-deductible contributions at any time. You may contribute cash, securities or real estate, and you avoid tax on any capital gain.

Gifts For The Future
A gift of life insurance can provide a significant future gift to NKF at an affordable present cost to you. Many people own some life insurance because of its unique ability to meet a variety of needs for financial protection, but its role in planned charitable giving is frequently overlooked.

Giving a new or existing policy will provide a tax deduction for the present cash value of the policy and/or the future premiums you pay if the National Kidney Foundation is named as beneficiary and owner of the policy. (Simply designating NKF as beneficiary does not result in a tax deduction.)

The Heritage Club
Become a Heritage Club member and provide hope to the more than 450,000 people living with kidney disease throughout Kansas and Western Missouri. The Heritage Club was established as a means to recognize and thank those individuals who have included the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri in their will, retirement income plan, insurance policy, gift annuity or other means of planned giving. Ada DeBold Society
The Ada DeBold Society was created to help ensure the philanthropic future of the NKF and offers a new way for recognizing individuals who make a significant contribution to the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri affiliate. The Society takes its name from Ada DeBold, whose infant son had been stricken with nephrosis, a condition for which little was known and even less could be done at that time. Mrs. DeBold's determination to help other families whose children had nephrosis was one of the primary reasons for the founding of the organization which would later be known as the National Kidney Foundation. Today, people have an opportunity to help the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri by becoming a member of the Ada DeBold Society. Major gifts of $5,000 or more or a Planned Gift of $25,000 or more qualifies you for membership in the Society. The benefits of membership include permanent recognition in the annual report's "Honor Roll of Donors", recognition on affiliate and national wall plaques, a distinctive Ada DeBold Society memento, invitations to select events and policy and program updates from the NKF Serving Kansas & Western Missouri.
