Under the current IRS law, you may only deduct the actual sale price of your vehicle or $500 whichever is greater. Once a car is donated, it is sold through auction to recyclers and dealers. The National Kidney Foundation sells each car in a competitive bidding environment, offered to thousands of buyers who may recondition your vehicle, or recycle it for its most valuable use. Many donated vehicles that are not in running condition are recycled. After the car sells, the National Kidney Foundation uses the proceeds to fund lifesaving programs and services for millions of Americans who have kidney disease.
