Finding the Answers

Finding answers to some very important questions. What causes kidney disease? How can we prevent its progress? And, what can we do to improve quality of life for those with kidney disease today, through ground-breaking treatments? NKF's research program spends $3 million annually on more than 60 awards granted to the brightest minds in science so that every day will bring us closer to getting those answers.

Early Detection

Preventing or delaying kidney disease from turning into kidney failure. NKF offers free screening for those at risk through its Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP). NKF is finding kidney disease at the earliest stage when prevention of further complications is still possible. KEEP screens more than 1,000 Americans each month in communities across the United States.

Support for Patients and Their Families

Serving and supporting patients and families whose lives were changed forever with a kidney disease diagnosis. NKF puts patients in the driver's seat by educating them so they can make key decisions and take control of their own healthcare. Local support groups, counseling, financial assistance and online patient communities are some of the ways the NKF stands side by side with its patients and families.

Public Policy for Patients

Making our patients' voices heard by policymakers at both state and national levels. NKF's far-reaching advocacy programs impact legislation on key issues of concern to our constituents, including chronic kidney disease education, living organ donation and Medicare coverage for dialysis, transplantation and essential medications.

Teaching Health Care Professionals About Chronic Kidney Disease

Ensuring that kidney doctors and health care professionals never stop learning. Since our patients' needs can only be met by well-informed professionals, the Foundation created and continually provides an array of internationally known Continuing Medical Education (CME and CEU) opportunities as well as enduring professional education materials.

Reaching Out to 26 Million Americans

Launching public education initiatives that heighten awareness of the risk factors for chronic kidney disease, the importance of early detection, prevention strategies and the desperate need for organ donation. Through national media campaigns reaching millions each year, celebrity spokespeople, a comprehensive website and more than 70 informational brochures on a variety of kidney topics, the NKF takes its critical message to the public.
