Faces of the Games

CARSON KITCH, 4

Moorhead, MN

Candy Marie Pagel

Whether he’s paddling in the swimming pool, riding a pony or simply fooling around in his backyard, Carson Kitch acts like a normal four-year-old boy. But this spunky and energetic child’s first four years were anything but typical. Resilience, miracles and generosity are the reasons Carson is here today, despite being born with liver disease, a heart defect and needing a lung transplant before he was a year old.

Born with biliary atresia, a disease of the liver, as well as a heart defect that required open heart surgery, Carson learned early on to beat the odds. Despite numerous hospital visits and endless treatments, he refused to give in.

This same enthusiasm and spirit propelled him to the National Kidney Foundation 2004 U.S. Transplant Games where he competed in the 50 meter dash and the softball throw. His mother, Rhonda, smiles as she recalls Carson’s eyes lighting up at the opening ceremony. “He loved the people, the excitement,” she says, “and he couldn’t wait to show off some of his talents.”

Following the 2004 Games, Carson underwent another open heart surgery, and is now well enough to attend preschool. This June, he and his family will travel to Louisville to attend the 2006 Transplant Games. There, Carson hopes to bring home medals in the long jump, 50 meter dash, softball throw and swimming competitions.
