“A Salute to Caregivers”

By: Sophia Washington

About five years ago I was surprised to learn that my liver enzymes were elevated. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that was destroying my liver. To be faced with such a serious health problem in my mid thirties was a great blow! I was devastated and afraid.

My doctor gave me medication to slow the disease process. The medication worked for two years after which I was placed on the transplant list. The transplant surgery was successful. However, several days later a serious problem developed. There was no blood flow to the hepatic artery, requiring more surgery, which didn’t work. I was again placed on the transplant list. For the second time, I received the gift of life.

It has been 19 months since my second transplant, and I had only one minor problem with a virus. I feel happy and healthy. I am 41 years old now and back at work part time as an educator, work I have done for 11years, and I also volunteer for the organ recovery agency in Michigan, the Gift of Life.

Words can never express my gratitude for the people who have cared for me throughout my illness—my husband, relatives, friends, doctors, nurses and transplant support staff. I especially honor my mother for her commitment to save my life. It was through her dedication and loyalty that I can now smile again. She never left my hospital bedside. Upon returning home my recovery took her faith, constant prayer and love--only a parent can do so much. She put her life and health on hold to see me stand tall once again. I will always be grateful to my caregivers!
