In this spirit, National Kidney Foundation Serving Connecticut is thrilled to be able to host its annual Night of Hope Gala in-person on March 10, 2022. This incredible evening will be held at Aria Banquet in Prospect, Connecticut. Please come celebrate with us, as we honor Dr. Richard Formica, MD with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Oscar Serrano, MD with the Excellence in Care Award.

Richard N. Formica Jr, MD.
Dr. Formica is a practicing transplant nephrologist. He is the Director of Transplant Medicine and the Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Formica graduated from Boston University in 1989 with a degree in chemistry and Boston University School of Medicine in 1993. He trained in internal medicine at the Combined Boston University Internal Medicine Program and served as the last Chief Medical Resident for Boston City Hospital. He then moved to Yale University for his Nephrology Fellowship. In addition to his responsibilities at Yale, he is currently the Past President of the American Society of Transplantation, the OPTN/UNOS Region 1 Counselor, a member of the OPTN/UNOS Board of Directors and an at large member of the OPTN/UNOS Membership and Professional Standards Committee. For the past the two years he has chaired the MPSC subcommittee on Performance Monitoring Enhancement that has redesigned the national standards by which transplant programs are assessed for quality.
Dr. Oscar Serrano
Dr. Oscar K. Serrano grew up in Mexico for the first 12 years of his life. After graduating high school from a small mining town in Arizona in 1996, he attended the University of Arizona and graduated in 2000 with high honors in Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology. He subsequently enrolled at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Between his 3rd and 4th year of medical school, he spent a year working on cancer immunotherapy at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) under the auspices of the Clinical Research Training Program. After graduating from Stanford in 2006, began his general surgery residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Between his 2nd and 3rd year of residency, he returned to NIH after receiving an Intramural Research Training Award from the National Institutes of Digestive Disorders and Kidney Disease to study cancer metabolism and nutrition. In 2010, he received a Master’s in Business Administration in Healthcare management from the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School. He completed his general surgery residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City in 2015. Subsequently, he completed a 2-year multiorgan transplantation and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) fellowship at the University of Minnesota in 2017. He joined Hartford Hospital in 2018 with specific clinical interests in liver and kidney transplantation, pediatric transplantation, and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery. His academic interests include disparities in access to transplant, cancer, and end-organ care. He has published over 80 journal articles and book chapters and serves as a reviewer to several surgical, transplant, and cancer journals. He is passionate about providing care for Connecticut’s underserved population. He is fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian. He is married to Katie and has 2 beautiful children, Sophie Claire and Connor Javier.

Jocelyn Maminta
Jocelyn Maminta has had a distinguished broadcast news career spanning more than 30 years most of it here in Connecticut as an anchor and medical reporter for WTNH in New Haven. She is best known for her work as Good Morning Connecticut at Nine Co-Anchor and Emmy Award nominated News 8 Medical reporter, but she has also anchored and reported for televisions stations in North Carolina, Buffalo, Milwaukee, and Texas.
She is currently the Director of Multi-Media Content for Hartford Healthcare (HHC) – Fairfield Region. In this role, Jocelyn uses all her skills as a journalist to share stories of hope and healing and breakthrough technology and healthcare improvements in all the service lines of HHC.
A political science graduate of the University of Missouri in Columbia, Jocelyn continues to work tirelessly for many nonprofits across Connecticut. She has been honored countless times for her efforts and dedication to bettering the lives of those around her.
Jocelyn is more than a dedicated journalist of high standards, she is also a philanthropist and entrepreneur. She currently serves on the Board of Friends of Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital and was its past president for four years; is a past board member and is a current advisor to the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, and is a member of the Junior League of Greater New Haven. Jocelyn is an advisory member on the board of The Patient Is You Foundation - a patient advocacy organization and a member of Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital Family Council.
Jocelyn is co-founder of Caroline’s Room, a safe haven for families coping with the challenges and uncertainties surrounding the birth of a premature baby. There are Caroline’s Rooms in Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Texas and Virginia. The first Caroline’s Room is at Yale-New-Haven Children’s Hospital and a second is located at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
She is the owner and CEO of JM Media Group, LLC a certified minority owned business with a focus on health and healthcare.

Your health and safety continue to be our number one priority. NKF’s staff, board of directors and healthcare advisors are closely monitoring the on-going Covid-19 pandemic. We are currently planning to host this event in-person on 3/10/22. Our safety procedures were created in accordance with state, local and federal guidelines.
If a change to the current program needs to be made, we will provide you with detailed information on those changes and how we’ll be connecting the kidney community in that situation.- Let’s have fun and help keep each other healthy!
