Top 10 Tips for Reducing Cholesterol

If you're firing up the barbecue every weekend this summer, you may want to think about grilling vegetables or fish and laying off the cholesterol-laden meat. Too much cholesterol causes heart disease and for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), heart disease is very common. To help reduce your total cholesterol levels, here are the top ten tips from the National Kidney Foundation.

Jerrydean Queen

KEEPing the Good Times Rolling

Born and raised in New Orleans, where she's spent all of her 70 years, Jerrydean Queen loves to party. From Mardi Gras parades to Carnival balls, Jazz and French Quarter Festivals, Queen's calendar is filled with celebrations. This mother and grandmother would like to be around for many more of these festivities and so she decided to focus on her health last year when she attended a free kidney screening offered through the National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Early Evaluation Program. Long-term Exposure to Estrogen Increases High Blood Pressure in Women

For many years, doctors believed that the estrogen women consumed in the form of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) pills was good for their patients' hearts. A recent study, however, has shown that long-term exposure to estrogen can be a danger to women as it has been associated with high blood pressure--a key link to kidney disease, heart attack and stroke.

Dialysis is Saving Sydney's Life

Sydney Knicely, a 4th grader from McKeesport, Pennsylvania, never misses a day of school and participates in extracurricular activities including art, gym and music. After school, she horses around with her younger sister, does household chores and plays softball on a slow-pitch team with other neighborhood girls. This may seem unremarkable, but what sets Sydney apart is that she's actively involved in all of these activities while undergoing dialysis to treat her kidney failure.

Click here for more on Sydney's story and here to watch "Dialysis Saves Lives," a new NKF video highlighting Sydney's experiences as well as those of three other patients — a well-known TV actor, a busy, working grandmother and a Grammy award-winning Mariachi band member. The video was made possible through a grant from Fresenius Medical Care.
