New York, NY (August 12, 2008) - If you’re making a list and checking it twice this holiday season, check this out: you have much more to give then you ever imagined. The most substantial, personal gift you could ever give is one that could make many people extraordinarily happy. And it won’t cost you a penny, a trip to the mall or even the time it takes to fill out tedious forms at online retailers.

Fifty. That’s how many people the National Kidney Foundation says can be helped when just one person signs up to become a potential organ or tissue donor. There will come a time in your life when you’ll have organs and tissues to spare, and now’s the time to commit that you’re willing to give someone a gift he can really use.

As part of its Holiday Gift of Life Campaign, the National Kidney Foundation is reminding Americans that for Christmas, Chanukah or Kwanzaa perhaps the greatest present anyone can give is the promise to save or enhance the life of another person. It is also possible to donate a kidney or partial liver or lung while still alive, according to the foundation.

Right now, about 100,000 men, women and children are on America’s waiting list for organ or tissue transplants. And while they wait, 18 people die each day. For more information on organ donation and a free donor card, please contact the National Kidney Foundation at (800)622-9010 or visit

The National Kidney Foundation is dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation. To learn more, visit
