4 Ways to Protect Your Single Kidney

December 14, 2017, 1:07pm EST

Whether you are a kidney donor or recipient it’s important to protect your single kidney. As the new year approaches, it’s a great time to reflect and make a resolution to either improve or maintain your kidney health. Here are some important things to watch out for:

Salt

Americans in general eat way too much salt. It’s used as a preservative in many pre-packaged foods, and also typically high in restaurants, especially fast food.  Following a healthy diet in general is important too!

NSAIDs

Just because they’re over the counter doesn’t mean they are safe.  If you have chronic pain, talk with your healthcare professional about other kidney-friendly options to address your pain.

Contrast-dye

If you’re kidney function is good, this might not be a problem, but it’s something to talk with your healthcare provider about before you schedule that MRI, CT scan, or angiogram with contrast

Anti-acid medication

These types of over the counter medications, also known as proton pump inhibitors, help treat GERD or acid reflux. Recently an increased risk of kidney disease has been noted in people who take these medications long-term. Talk with your healthcare professional to make sure they are aware that you only have one kidney.
