Which of these beverages, per serving, contains the most caffeine?

  1. 12 fl. ounce can of cola
  2. 8 fl. ounce cup of coffee
  3. 8 fl. ounce cup of black tea
  4. 8.4 fl. ounce can of energy drink

ANSWER: b

  1. The cup of coffee contains 95 mg of caffeine per 8 fluid ounce serving.

All of these commonly-consumed beverages contain caffeine, one of the most widely consumed stimulants. Here are some examples of the average milligrams of caffeine in one serving of the drinks listed above.
Beverage Serving Size (fluid ounces) Amount of Caffeine (mg)
    Cola 1 can - 12 oz. 29
    Coffee 1 cup - 8 oz. 95*
    Black tea 1 cup - 8 oz. 47*
    Energy drink 1 can - 8.4 oz. 77

Of the above choices, at 95 mg per cup, the coffee contains the most caffeine per serving. The energy drink contains the next highest level of caffeine per serving with 77 mg of caffeine, followed by the black tea with 47 milligrams of caffeine and lastly the can of cola which contains 29 mg of caffeine.

*These reflect an average, but because the amount of caffeine can vary based on brew time, coffee and tea can contain higher levels of caffeine. The caffeine content of coffee can also vary based on other factors, including the type of beans used. Sometimes coffee can contain as much as 200 mg of caffeine per 8 oz. serving.

What exactly is caffeine?

Caffeine is naturally found in the leaves and seeds of certain plants, but it can also be created artificially and added to food and drinks. In moderation, caffeine is known to help with alertness, but in excess it can cause nervousness or "jitters." Caffeine is also a mild diuretic which means it can lead to increased urine output by the kidneys. Some people experience this as an "urge" to use to bathroom after consuming caffeine, but it is usually short-lived.
