**National Kidney Foundation Funding Opportunities for Clinical and Basic Research**
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) has embarked upon an initiative designed to increase support of clinical research through its Postdoctoral Fellowship, Young Investigator Grant and Clinical Scientist Award programs. This undertaking includes the establishment of a special Study Section which will review Fellowship, Young Investigator Grant, and Clinical Scientist Award proposals involving clinical research. Basic science applications are reviewed by a separate Study Section which evaluates all Fellowship and Young Investigator Grant proposals involving basic research. Applications for funding beginning on July 1, 2009 are due December 1, 2008.

NKF to Double Research Funding
The National Kidney Foundation's investment strategy is all about futures – the healthy futures of kidney patients and their families that we are working to ensure through our soon-to-be-expanded research program. The NKF has committed to doubling its funding of research grants and fellowships to promising young scientists over the next five years. Beginning in 2008, the research budget will increase from $2,800,000 in five yearly increments until it reaches $5,600,000 annually. Top areas of research focus include chronic kidney disease, hemodialysis, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and pediatric kidney disease. “I believe research is actually an important patient service,” said NKF Chairman, Chuck Fruit. “It helps patients today and those who may not have to be patients tomorrow.”
