Our Mission
The National Kidney Foundation, a major voluntary nonprofit health organization, is dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by kidney disease and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.
How We Help
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) has been providing help and hope to kidney patients and their families since 1950. Today, with local offices across the country, NKF is meeting the growing public health challenge of chronic kidney disease with a range of vital programs and services for the public, patients and healthcare professionals.
PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION—NKF raises awareness about kidney health and the importance of early detection through the national "Love Your Kidneys" public service campaign, news releases, free brochures, local education programs, a toll-free hotline and an information-rich website.
EARLY DETECTION—Thousands of people have benefited from free kidney health risk assessments and more than 160,000 people at risk for kidney disease have participated in NKF's free Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP®).
RESEARCH SUPPORT—NKF has awarded nearly $90 million in grants to over 1,000 scientists for research into the prevention and treatment of kidney disease and related conditions.
PATIENT ADVOCACY—NKF vigorously advocates for kidney patients, transplant recipients, living donors and donor families on key public policy and legislative issues at both the national and state level.
ORGAN DONATION—NKF has been a leader in promoting organ and tissue donation. The Foundation recently launched a groundbreaking action plan to END THE WAIT! for a kidney transplant in the U.S. by standardizing best practices and eliminating barriers to donation across the country.
What You Can Do
LEARN—Throughout our website the public can obtain accurate and clear information about all aspects of kidney disease. Medical professionals can review guidelines and access resources for the optimal care of patients.
GET TESTED—26 million Americans have chronic kidney disease. You may be one of them. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of these conditions or kidney disease, you are at risk.
