Advocacy & Government Relations
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) helps to shape public policy on behalf of kidney disease patients. Together with our local Divisions and Affiliates, we work with Congress and federal agencies, as well as with state governments to further legislation and regulation that improve the care and quality of life of kidney disease patients.
Our public policy efforts are supported by thousands of NKF People Like Us, NKF's nationwide grassroots advocacy network comprised of chronic kidney disease patients, transplant recipients, organ donors, family, friends and health professionals.
Issues and Legislation
- Chronic Kidney Disease – NKF is calling on Congress to expand the Chronic Kidney Disease Control Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to support early detection and treatment among high-risk populations.
- Dialysis – The Health Care Reform movement in Congress provides an opportunity to expand the choices available to dialysis patients.
- Transplantation and Organ Donation – To help close the gap that exists between the need for organs for transplantation and organ availability, NKF advocates for ways to increase the supply of organs for transplantation and to help recipients keep the transplant they have received.
