How do I control fluid weight gain?

One of the main functions of your kidneys is to balance fluid in your body. But when kidneys do not work well, they are no longer able to remove extra fluid. If too much fluid builds up, it can have harmful effects on your health, such as difficulty breathing and swelling. Ask your healthcare professional if you need to limit fluids, and how much fluid is okay for you each day. Use these tips:
  • Track your fluid. Some people use a visual to help them see how much fluid they are taking in. Find a container that you can mark or keep track of every liquid you have daily with the National Kidney Foundation mobile app H2O Overload.
  • Manage your thirst. A dietitian can help you find ways to manage your thirst such as sugar-free hard candies or frozen grapes.
  • Manage your salt (sodium). Salt causes your body to hold on to water. Too much salt in your diet will increase your chances of fluid gain.
