Living with PD: Diet

People on PD generally have a less restricted diet compared with those on standard hemodialysis. The goal of the diet for PD is to make sure the body has the right amounts of protein and certain minerals.
People who use peritoneal dialysis lose protein with every exchange, which usually means they must eat an increased amount of protein in the diet. Protein is found in meat, milk, chicken, fish, and eggs; lower-quality protein is found in some vegetables and grains. A dietitian can provide specific recommendations about how much and what type of protein is needed.
Other changes in diet may include reducing the amount of foods high in phosphorus and sodium and as well as limiting the amount of fluids consumed.
