The Advancing American Kidney Health Initiative (AAKHI), launched in 2019 by the Department of Health and Human Services, increased preemptive referrals for kidney transplant to chronic kidney disease and dialysis patients. This has led providers to more discussions about transplantation with CKD patients. As a result, this has had a positive impact on the number of kidney transplants.
