The Donald W. Seldin Distinguished Award was established to recognize excellence in clinical nephrology in the tradition of one of the foremost teachers and researchers in the field, Dr. Donald W. Seldin.
After his MD from Indiana University, Tom Golper went to Oregon for training in Medicine and Nephrology under George Porter, Bill Bennett, Walt McDonald and Marcha Wolfson, all of whom markedly influenced his career in the study of dialysis. With Steve Alexander he developed a peritoneal dialysis program and was one of the founders of the Ad Hoc Committee on Peritonitis for the International Society of PD. He is a past president of its North American Chapter and initiated its time zone journal clubs. His sabbatical experience at the European Dialysis and Transplant Association Registry led to involvement with the US Renal Data System. He chaired the first two iterations of the NKF Dialysis Outcome Quality Initiative PD Adequacy Workgroup.
He continues to review for many journals and organizations (e.g.KDIGO) and is a Section co-editor for dialysis in Up to Date. He has mentored dozens of fellows with highly successful private practice, academic, or industrial positions. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Kidney Patients and the Renal Physicians Association. Having published over 250 papers and chapters, he remains involved in meaningful research projects, trying to stimulate and encourage innovation and collaboration.
